Tipner West, Portsmouth
The opportunity / type:
At Tipner West, the city is driving forward ambitious plans for a unique and innovative development that makes the most of the city’s location, heritage and skills.
A leading marine employment hub will create work and training opportunities for local people, drive investment into the city, and reinforce Portsmouth’s place in the heart of the Solent maritime economy.
This opportunity was recognised by central government when Portsmouth was awarded £48.75 million to invest in growth, critical infrastructure, skills and jobs at Tipner West and Horsea Island East.
At this site we have the chance to:
- Create 58,000 sqm of green marine employment space
- Introduce over 4,000 new jobs and training placements
- Build good quality new homes that people in Portsmouth can afford and want to live in
- Add a critical infrastructure link with a new bridge for buses, bikes and pedestrians
Tipner West’s location means it is the ideal place to create a leading green marine employment hub that will bring work and training opportunities for local people, drive investment into Portsmouth, and build on our great maritime heritage.
The marine and maritime sector is the largest sector in the Solent region and the Solent is the highest ranked and most diverse marine cluster in England and Wales. However, the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership has identified a need for more floorspace, manual and skilled jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities across ship building, engineering, maritime research and green technology, to boost the UK’s marine and maritime sector. Tipner West has been identified as the only place in the Solent where it’s possible to deliver the right mix of facilities and deep water access.
The combination of deep-water access, excellent transport connections, and location within the Solent makes Tipner West in Portsmouth an ideal location for a new marine employment hub. It will be able to link into the Solent Freeport, make the most of Portsmouth’s heritage and skills and address the decline of shipbuilding in the city.
Portsmouth needs thousands of new, good quality and affordable homes. As part of the regeneration of Tipner West, there is an opportunity to build future-focused homes to meet the needs of the city, its residents and the future employees in the green marine employment hub.
A new bridge between Tipner West and Horsea Island East will provide a new bus, bike and pedestrian link between Portsea Island and the north of the city. As part of the South East Hampshire Rapid Transit it would provide a valuable alternative to the motorway.
